Meeting Henry Winkler (A.K.A.The Fonz!!)

Meeting Henry Winkler last night (a.k.a. the Fonz) was a childhood dream come true. I remember looking forward to coming home from school on the days that it aired. Laverne and Shirley was another favorite but there was something about Happy Days that literally made my days "happy" by watching that show. Hearing his story about how he struggled in grade school with dyslexia was both shocking and humbling. The fact that he succeeded in his own way and time in school was impressive. No one was aware of what dyslexia was back then as opposed to now. Which brings me to a short story about my son.

Luckily Noah doesn't have dyslexia but he wasn't a good reader when was in first grade. He only learned sight words in Kindergarten, and when he began first grade had no clue how to read. That's when this amazing specialist came into the picture, and I will always be grateful to her! She taught him so much during the day, and I took up the rest of the slack when he came home. The more he practiced with her, the better he got in reading. Now that he's in fourth grade his reading comprehension hit the roof, and is now in an advanced level of reading. He has developed a love for reading just like his sisters and continues to enjoy it. And is especially loving Henry's new book Alien Superstar!

Meeting Mr. Winkler was truly a blessing, and knowing that he succeeded and went to Yale gives me extreme hope and faith in knowing that our kids with any kind of special needs can go far in life. Just gotta put a little more effort in it!
